Chennai which is formerly known as Madras (or) Madarasapatinam, is the capital of Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Chennai is the 4th popular Metropolitan area in India out of ten metros. Chennai is the 5th most populated city in India.
The name Chennai is a shortened form of Chennapattanam. There are 2 versions about the origin of the name Chennai.
1) Chennapattanam was named after Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu, Nayak of Kalahasthi & Vandavasi. He was the father of Damarla Venkatadri Nayakudu. The British acquired the town from Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu in the year 1639. The 1st official use of the name Chennai is said to be in a sale deed, dated 08/08/1639, to Francis Day of the English East India Co.,
2) Chennapattanam was named after the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple and the temple was regarded as the face of the city.
Madras Day is a day of celebrations organised in the city of Madras (Chennai), the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated on 22 August every year, and is named after Madras. It commemorates the founding of the modern city by establishing Fort St George on a small piece of land acquired from the last King of Chandragiri in 1639 by the British East India Company.
It was on 22/08/1639 that a silver of land, where now stands Fort Saint George, was handed over by the local Nayak rulers to the English East India Co., by Francis Day to Beri Thimmappa.
